Frequently Asked Questions
here to help you decide…
What is epoxy resin flooring?
Epoxy resin flooring is usually made up of two components. The polyamine hardener and the epoxy resin. These two are combined before it is applied to the floor, which then cures as a durable, rigid layer.
Are epoxy resin floors durable?
One of the biggest and most sought after benefits of epoxy resin floors is their durability. They can handle being exposed to chemicals, water, and very heavy loads – things that concrete and cement-based floors wouldn’t necessarily be able to withstand. These characteristics are crucial for flooring in some industries.
Epoxy resin flooring systems can and usually last 10 years plus when in a domestic home or garage. With continued use in an industrial environment, then you’d expect to see some signs of wear a bit earlier.
How long will an epoxy resin floor last?
An epoxy resin flooring system can last over 10 years if it is well maintained. This figure can come down to around 7 years if the floor is in an industrial setting, such as a factory, where there may be continued exposure to chemicals and heavy traffic.
Epoxy resin floors will last a lot longer if installed by trained professionals like our team at Artisan. We can make sure the existing floor is adequately prepared to provide the best substrate for the epoxy resin to bond with, before applying the correctly specified epoxy resin flooring system to the highest standard.
Are epoxy resin floors smooth?
Epoxy resin floors provide a smooth surface, especially in comparison to a concrete or cement floor. They are seamless in their design, meaning they have no cracks or many edges like a tiled floor. This makes them super easy to clean, as there is nowhere for dirt to get trapped. Please note that if necessary, anti-slip properties can be installed to give increased slip resistance.
How would I get an epoxy resin floor repaired?
Epoxy resin floors can begin to have signs of wear and tear if they are not well maintained and are used continuously. Thankfully, most damaged epoxy resin flooring systems can be localised. This means that you can fix a section of the floor, without having to re-lay the whole thing. This makes epoxy resin flooring an affordable option. Many floors can be ‘refreshed’ by the addition of a single coat to give that ‘brand new’ look once more.
You would need a professional to mechanically prepare the damaged section of the floor and have a new layer/layers of epoxy resin applied. At Artisan Epoxy Interiors, we’re happy to carry out repairs and maintenance to your resin flooring systems.
How long does epoxy resin flooring take to cure/dry?
It should be fine to walk on the epoxy resin flooring after just 24 hours, but you should do so cautiously. However, it takes 72 hours for it to completely cure. After this time, you should be fine to begin moving heavy furniture/equipment onto it. There are faster curing epoxy resins available if the floor is required to be back in use quickly.
Factors such as the temperature can affect the curing time of the floor. The optimum temperature is ideally 15 degrees celsius. If it is anything below this, then you will need to add extra curing time.
Can epoxy resin flooring be used outside?
You could potentially use epoxy resin for flooring outside your home, but it is more commonly used in spaces such as garages and commercial flooring areas. This is because the epoxy resin is not UV stable, so it will eventually yellow when constantly exposed to UV light. Other options are available such as polyurethane flooring.
Is epoxy resin flooring expensive?
The size of the surface you would like the flooring system on, and other extras such as added aggregates for an anti-slip quality, or coloured flake would determine the price of your epoxy resin flooring system. If you need prep work on the surface before the epoxy resin is applied, then there would be some extra charges too. Usually, the price provided encompasses the whole process from preparation to the required finished surface.
Can you customise epoxy resin flooring?
You can customise epoxy resin flooring in a few ways. There is a wide range of resin colours to choose from, and you can even add coloured flakes. If you’re after something a bit more eye-catching, then you could choose from having glitter/pearlescent and/or swirl type effects added. All of which we offer and once completed you’ll be delighted with the outcome.
